Excerpt from a speech given by Lou Holtz (former ND coach now at South Carolina)

Success is not easy, but it's not complicated, either,'' Holtz said. "Everything has to be based on trust.''

Holtz compared Logan Center's quest to develop a new facility with his final years at Notre Dame. He said the Logan administration has a dream that he wishes he would have had.

"There isn't anything more important in this world than helping people,'' Holtz said. As he has said in the past, Holtz blamed his desire to maintain rather than striving for more success as the cause of the fatigue he felt at the end of the 1996 season, his last in South Bend.

"You reach a point in your life where you say, 'This is pretty good. We've achieved an awful lot. Let's just keep it here.' It was the dumbest thing I've ever done. I wasn't tired of coaching, I was tired of maintaining.

"When all you're doing is maintaining, there's no enthusiasm and no excitement. You have no reason to come up with any new ideas.

"The rule of life is this: You're either growing or you're dying. Any time you're just trying to maintain anything, you're dying. I've found the most important thing in this world is to be important to somebody else. That's what's so great about this community and Logan. You have dedicated people at Logan. They have dreams, they have hope, they have ambition. They want to build. They're not content, they want to be the best they can be.

"This is a prime example of what life is all about.''
